MARK FELL / MIKA VAINIO / ERRORSMITH
Kindly supported by INM
Mark Fell works with synthetic sound, light and experimental technologies; bringing together interests in computational technologies, non- musical sound synthesis, oppositional aesthetics, and irregular encounters with time and space. With projects ranging from minimal electronic music, to sound installations and audio-visual works, Fell was quickly placed at the forefront of extreme and independent computer music. His contribution to this field owes much to earlier interests in, and exposure to, structuralist/materialist film and contemporary philosophy. Fell’s musical performances, although grounded in the techno musics of his home town near Sheffield, present a fragmented and volatile rhythmic journey, where all sense of regular tempo and repetition are undermined.
Mika Vainio was one half of the minimal electronic duo Pan Sonic from Finland. Before starting Pan Sonic in the beginning of the 90’s, Mika Vainio has played electronics and drums as part of the early Finnish industrial and noise scene. His solo works, under his own name and under aliases like Ø, are known for their analogue warmth and electronic harshness. Be it abstract drone works or minimal avant techno, Vainio is always creating unique, physical sounds. He has released on labels like editions Mego, Touch, Wavetrap and Sähkö and he has been producing among others with Alan Vega of Suicide, Keiji Haino, Chicks on Speed, John Duncan and Bruce Gilbert.

Errorsmith produces clubmusic in the broadest sense since the mid 90’s. He is part of MMM (together with Berghain resident dj Fiedel) and Smith n Hack (with Soundstream/Soundhack). Errorsmith is a solo project, dedicated to the expansion of the sonic horizon thru digital sound synthesis. Backed by his studies of communication and computer science errorsmith builds his own instruments using a modular software synthesizer. In fact building and improving the instrument while developing a musical piece is the main part of music making. Often a technical idea is the starting point of a track. The musical value and possibilties of such ideas are explored.
